I once noted that mountains seemed to be visible on the far shore of Lake Erie. The postmaster at the local post office / gas station / convenience store / boat rental (yeah, Very small town), told me that I am seeing mountains- but they are 70 miles away, more than twice the distance to the horizon!

He told me one can sometimes see the lights of vehicles coming over the mountain. That's pretty neat.

Note: Thanks to :iconkantuck-nadie: , I can now name this phenomenon: A Fata Morgana.

Taken October 12, 2012, around 7:10 in the morning.

It's kind of a 'reverse mirage' and if you were to be on a Mountain along the Ocean, even Stranger things can happen at Sunset, like Ships appearing to "Fly" at several thousand Feet above the Water.

Very curious. Never seen those before. I think they tried about 30 too soon, though. Tech should be a lot better now.

Actually, these Aircraft Flew just fine, but they were Not the kind of performance 'Jump' the Air Force was looking for... like many Projects at that Time, the Engineers' lack of Knowledge of Physical Limits led them to 'predict' Performance Goals that could Not be Met... This Aircraft, however Clever its Systems, was Still limited to Low Supersonic Performance, and with a Penalty of Instability at Low Speed that could Not be solved by the 'Autopilot' Functions at the Time.
Another, similar Project was the
North American B-70 Bomber, a Huge Aircraft that was Intended to Replace the B-52 (actually, a WWII
Design) and it was one of the 'New'
Aircraft that My Father was 'programming' for when He was in the Strategic Office under Curtis LeMay; the '70' in the Designation was for the 70-Megaton 'Superbomb' that Herr Doktor-Ing. Ed Teller had Designed.
That 'Project' was abandoned after the Engineers in My Father's Office determined that the Weapon was such futile "overkill" that they couldn't Imagine a Target worth the Cost to Use one...
It was something that would have,
if Used, Destroyed a City like New York (or Moscow) so Completely, that not even a Half-Brick in the bottom of the Sewer System would have been Recognizable as the Work of Man...

But Yeah, the "Flying Saucers" is a running Joke among those as Myself, who were around the Men who Built them... this Article was about something 2 Generations of Design before the Air-over-Plutonium Ramjet, and the Liquid-
Sodium Cooled Thorium Turbine Engine. (You can't Google that, because Google is Owned by the NSA...

*blinks* well, you can google that last phrase... but I would Hope that they hadn't actually used Thorium Reactors in those things! I don't think that tech is anywhere near ready, or able to be made that small.

Oh so this is a form of a Fata Morgana? I have never seen one myself.

I have a personal enjoyment of atmospheric phenomena which comes from my love of astronomy, which is why I suspected this :).
