Did you ever notice as you began, how clunky the story felt? How awkward the conversations seemed? Were there concepts you wished to put forward that, as you looked back upon them, felt to you like people would be saying 'WTF where did That come from?'


And as you worked.... and the characters interacted. And each began to develop their own histories, which then interact with each other. And no two histories ever interact the same way....

It felt a lot better, didn't it? The bumps smoothed out. The interactions became more comfortable. Telling the story became both easier AND harder at the same time, because now there are so many ways you can take things....


I now understand why the first season of STNG feels so stiff (never mind what they did to Data, bringing in that other doctor as a foil for him, in the second season).

Maybe this is why George Lucas started off Star Wars as if half the epic was already done already. He may have started writing at the very beginning, he didn't show the public the story until it reached the good bits.
